Lexington is the largest school for deaf students in New York State. Children come to us from every borough and from families who speak many languages at home, and they stay with us from as early as birth through high school.

A deaf child should never be the last person in the room to know what is going on.
That single idea decides almost everything here. It is why language comes first, in ASL and in English, and why we start as early as families will let us rather than waiting for a child to fall behind and then catching them up.
It also shapes how we work with families. A great many of our parents are learning English themselves, and some are learning ASL at the same time as their child. Meeting them in their own language is not a courtesy we add on at the end. It is the beginning of the work.
What we ask of families is patience with the slow parts. Language grows the way anything alive grows: unevenly, then all at once. Our job is to make sure nothing important happens out of a child’s reach while it does.
Three words we mean literally. Every child is seen in a language they own, understood by adults who share it, and held to what they are actually capable of.
A single school for the whole way up.
Families do not have to start over every few years. A child can arrive as an infant and leave as a graduate, taught throughout by adults who have known them and their family the entire time.
Lower School

Audiology, speech and language, ASL and English interpreting, occupational and physical therapy, mental health, and family language services all work in the building, alongside the classroom, rather than as appointments a family has to chase across the city.

A two-year independent research project, mentored by a faculty advisor and presented publicly senior spring.
