A closer look at Preschool

Lexington's preschool program helps children develop a lifetime love of learning. The sensory-rich curriculum focuses on language and communication, social-emotional and cognitive skills. Learning to communicate is a vital part of a deaf child's early education, so classrooms use spoken language, speech-reading, auditory processing and sign language based on the child's needs. Children are encouraged to use an amplification system, and every preschool classroom is equipped with an FM system for sound amplification. Each classroom uses Thinking Maps, a research-based approach built on visual patterns linked to eight specific thought processes, so children create concrete images that support critical and creative thinking.

• Occupational and physical therapy as needed
• Counseling and play therapy as needed
• On-site audiological evaluations at the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center
• Free parent workshops and free American Sign Language classes for families
